Clogged Drain & Sewer Line Help in Northern Colorado
Sinks, tubs and toilets that drain slowly or back up, and basement floor drains that gurgle or overflow.
Drain & sewer clogs
What usually goes wrong
Start by noticing how many drains are affected. One slow sink or toilet is usually a local clog. Several fixtures backing up at once, or water rising in a basement floor drain when you run the washer, points to the main sewer line. In that case, stop using water in the house until the line is cleared.
Main line clogs in older Northern Colorado homes are often caused by tree roots, a sagging section of pipe, or a buildup of grease and wipes. A plumber can clear the line with a cable machine and, if the problem keeps returning, run a camera to see what is going on.
Skip chemical drain cleaners if a plumber is coming. They rarely clear a main line and can splash on whoever opens the pipe. And if a basement smells like sewer gas but nothing is clogged, pour a bucket of water into the floor drain; a dry trap is a common cause.
